Hotel Paradise Roof Garden Orchestra performs the Music of the Early Jazz Era
On Saturday, September 25, 2021, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm the Hotel Paradise Roof Garden Orchestra will perform at the Corner Community Center (CCC), outside under the portico. The 12-piece big band specializes in early jazz and dance tunes from 1920 to 1935. Our MC for the concert is WBJC's Program Manager Jonathan Palevsky.
The band’s founder and conductor, Lynn Summerall, says a shared bond between the group is their love of performing songs written before the Swing Era.The 9/25 performances (at 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm) will feature the music of George Gershwin and other standards from the early jazz repertoire.
“I chose to form a small version of a big band, the kind very popular from 1920 to 1935, before Goodman and Miller. I use 12 musicians including a violin which is unusual in this day and age,” Summerall says. “A huge pleasure this has given me is introducing this great music to audiences and musicians who knew little or nothing about it, beyond what they might hear in old movies or on records.”
The Concert, which is free of charge, will also feature vendors from CCC’s Thursday evening Farmer’s Market, the chance for job seekers to get free headshots by a professional photographer, and food trucks.
This will be BJHSG’s first in-person event and first 10th Anniversary event, says Janet Glover-Kerkvliet, BJHSG director. “I wanted our first in-person gathering to be fun, with opportunities to enjoy great music by a great band, great food, and great vendors.”
The event will take place rain or shine. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and lawn blankets. Tickets for the Virtual Gala on 11/6/2021 will be on sale during the event (see column at right).
